Top 20 Urban Successes

29 09 2010

Here’s an interesting list for those that love lists: The Top 20 Urban Planning Successes.  While the list does seem very subjective, it does have some interesting entries.  Ranking the city of Amsterdam first on the list seems like a bold move, but after reading how Amsterdam has had a strong urban planning presence since the 17th century, it makes more sense.  Today, Amsterdam is one of the least car dependent cities on earth and it owes this to successful planning.  I can certainly attest that Granville Island in Vancouver (at #7) and the Highline in New York City (at #9) are both extremely successful initiatives and have become very valuable pieces to the urban fabric of both Vancouver and New York City.  Anyways, while i’m sure any urban enthusiast will find something wrong with such a bold list, it’s still a very interesting read.
